New year, new endings

Just when I was busy trying to live my life
A soft zephyr gently stirred my hair
Whispered delicately into my ear
It was a breeze of truth
A reminder of the facts
Of the lines on my forehead
And the receding hairline
Words of love unspoken
Backlog of tasks undone
A list of people to talk to
Travel itineraries to tend to
Whole lot of broken promises
New year resolutions gone amiss
364 days of precious time
Consumed in a big glass of bad wine
Oh! What a terrible awakening
just on the last evening
As I watch the old year,
gracefully surrender to the inevitable dusk
I desperately wait for the new sun,
to rise up and spread its invigorating musk.

As the old year merges with the new one
Like the phoenix,
I shall spread my wings and rise again
Like the brave soldier,
I will mend the wounds and fight again.

This new year, I don’t want to have new beginnings
But open up old chapters and write new endings
This new year, I don’t want my dreams to be an exercise in futility
But wake up and stay within the realms of reality
This new year, I don’t want to make new promises
But take utter care to keep my prior commitments
This new year, I don’t want to scale new heights
But kickstart and simply continue the ride.
