Happy Birthday, Ama!

You left your fragrance behind
In a closet full of stories
Your clothes soaked with memories
Your slipper still waits on the floor
Thinking you will come through the door
Your chair looks for you day and night
To comfort you and hold you tight

These hollow walls vibrate
Speaking your words in silence
Today, there is no noise in the city
Oh! the house looks so awfully empty.

It’s only been a few weeks
and I miss you already
I was never near you
But you were always with me
I kept you close to my heart
and in my prayers
Your warmth I felt in many layers.

Ama, you had five granddaughters
Tell me was I your favorite?
Oh! let me just believe I was
Now that you are gone
We shall take your legacy forward
Your light will shine through us
Your love will forever reside in five of us.

You were a real beauty
From inside and out
With much love to give
To each and all
Your smile lit up the room
Your energy saved us from the gloom
You oozed youth and radiance
Your presence changed the ambience
Ama, you never really grew old
You always shone like the gold!

I will carry you with me
From January through December
In my memories you will stay forever
Your lessons will make me a better person
Your wings will protect me from world’s poison
The abundance of your blessings
Will help me in my everyday doings!
I’m a big girl
But for you Ama I will always be your little girl.

This poem is dedicated to my Grandmother who passed away on 6th March, 2016. She would have been 73 years today.

Wow! Krithika! That was so beautiful! Touched! I saw reflections of my own feelings for my wonderful dad, the best person I have ever known! He was also my friend, adviser, role model and hero!!!

You are an extremely talented young woman. It is truly my pleasure to know you in person. Keep writing…I look forward to more!

@ Roh and Anita – Thank you. I had to…I needed to…I wanted to pen something for her, you know to let the feelings out and express my gratitude.
